RethinkLit is designed for children in Kindergarten to Year 2, the years when handwriting, phonics and early spelling first take shape. If that ever changes, we’ll let you know.

Australian states use different names for the early years, so here’s how they line up in RethinkLit. “Kindergarten” is the year before school begins, which some states and families call Preschool, Pre-Kindy or Kinder. “Prep” is the first year of full-time school, known as Foundation, Reception or Pre-primary in some states, and confusingly as Kindergarten in New South Wales and the ACT. After that come Year 1 and Year 2. If you’re unsure, go by whether your child has started school. If they haven’t started yet, choose Kindergarten. If they’re in their first year, choose Prep.

Not at the moment. RethinkLit is built around the Australian Curriculum and the handwriting styles taught in Australian schools, so we offer it to users located in Australia only. We ask you to confirm this when you sign up, and if your location and payment card both indicate you are overseas we will cancel the sign-up before any payment is taken. If you live in Australia but bank with an overseas card, please get in touch and we will sort it out.

Just an iPad and a few quiet minutes. RethinkLit runs in your web browser, so there’s nothing to download or install. The handwriting activities work best with a finger or stylus on a touchscreen, which makes an iPad the ideal device.

You create your own password. After you sign up, we email you a link titled “Finish setting up your RethinkLit account”. Click it to choose your password, and from then on you log in with your email and that password. If you can’t find the email, check your spam folder, or contact us and we’ll help. The link lasts for your 7-day free trial. If you don’t set a password in that time, we cancel the trial, don’t charge you anything, and delete the unused account.

About 15 minutes a day is plenty. RethinkLit is built around short, focused sessions that build a steady habit and make real progress, without overwhelming a young learner.

Log in, go to the Classes tab and click “Set up your class”. Choose your grade, give the class a name, and pick your handwriting font and line style. Then add your students. You can type their names in, paste in your class list with one name per line, or upload a spreadsheet. Finally, print their login cards. It takes about two minutes.

This tells Sounds to Letters, our phonics lessons in Word Lab, where to start. If your class hasn’t been taught any letter sounds yet, choose “Nothing yet” and they’ll start from the first sounds. If you’ve already taught some, choose how far you’ve got. Students then skip those lessons, and review keeps those sounds fresh. To change it later, click the small pencil on your class. To change it for one student, click Edit at the far right of their row.

Yes. On the Classes tab, click the small pencil in the top-right corner of your class, choose a new font and writing guides, and click Save. This changes it for every student in the class. To change it for just one student, open your class, find that student’s row, and click Edit at the far right of the row.

No, the worksheets have their own setting. On the Printables tab, choose your state’s font each time you print. The font you set for your class is used for the handwriting in the lessons.

Each student has their own login card with a QR code. They scan it with the iPad camera, and it takes them straight into their account, with no usernames or passwords to remember. To print the cards again, open your class and click Student Logins.

You can reprint cards as often as you like. Open your class and click Student Logins. A reprinted card is the same as the original, so old copies keep working. If a card is lost or someone else has a copy, click View in that student’s row, under Student Login, and choose “Lost or copied? Replace with a new code”. Their old card stops working straight away, and you print them a new one.

A device can only be logged in to one account at a time, so when a student scans their card on a device you’re using, their login replaces yours. It works best to use your own computer for your teacher account and keep the student devices for students. If you need to share a device, log out of your teacher account before a student scans in, and log back in when they’ve finished.

Letter Lab, Word Lab and Listen & Write, on Teacher and School plans. In the Custom Content tab you can choose which letters your class practises, put Sounds to Letters lessons in your own order, or add your own spelling words and sentences. When you assign your content to a class or a group, those students will see it the next time they open that activity. Students still choose which activity to open.

Everything is grounded in structured literacy and the Science of Reading, with explicit, systematic phonics taught one step at a time. Every activity follows an “I Do, We Do, You Do” scaffold that gradually hands responsibility from a clear model to the independent learner.

The one used where you live. RethinkLit includes the handwriting fonts used across Australia, with matching dotted-thirds guidelines, so what your child practises looks just like what they’re taught at school. That covers Victorian Modern Cursive (VIC, WA and NT), NSW and ACT, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia.

Monthly plans are month-to-month, so you can cancel anytime and keep access until the end of your current billing period. Annual plans are a 12-month commitment that saves you money over the year; you can turn off renewal anytime, and your access continues until the end of the 12-month term. School plans run on an annual term and are not offered monthly.

Yes. The Parent plan includes up to two children, with the option to add more for a small monthly fee per child. The Teacher plan covers one teacher and up to 30 students, which suits most classes. For larger or team-taught groups, the School plan is the better fit.
